Damon had searched for a couple of hours and finally found Fox out by the pond. He was staring at it as if it held all the answers. He had never seen the marquess look so forlorn before. What could be bothering him? Was it the same thing that had Chris so irritable?

“Do you need someone to push you in?” Damon asked. “Or were you reminiscing about brighter days when your love was new?”

Fox jerked his head up and met Damon’s gaze. “What?”

Damn, Fox looked awful. “What is going on with Chris?”

“Nothing,” he blurted out. “At least nothing you need to worry about.”

Damon didn’t believe that for one second. His usually annoyingly assertive sister was not acting like herself, and neither was Fox. He has seemed all right when Damon had been pushed into the pond by Alex, but admittedly Damon had been a little preoccupied. Now that he had time to think about it, Fox had been off then too. But not as much as he was now... “Haven’t you realized by now, after a decade married to my sister, then any problems we have become a family affair?”

“Like the one you are having with your governess?” Fox fired back.

“She’s not my governess,” he answered. “Yet.”

Fox grinned. “Always the optimist aren’t you?”

“Actually...” He frowned. “I’m not. I never see the bright side of any situation. I don’t think any of us do. We’ve had to live in reality too long to believe in a happy-ever-after, even when we are actually living through it.”

He sighed. “Nothing in life is as simple as we would like it to be.”

“That’s absolutely true,” Damon agreed. Otherwise he would have been honest with Alex from the start, and perhaps they wouldn’t be estranged now. He fully believed, in time, he could win her trust again. The problem was that once lost, trust could not be so easily attained. “What is the truth between you and Chris?”

“She wouldn’t want me to tell you.” Fox paced. “But I don’t know what to do or say to her. She’s so...volatile.”

“On a good day, that is definitely true,” Damon said. Chris was the hellion. Of course, she could and would do anything without thinking of the consequences. “But this has nothing to do with her or you does it?”

Fox lifted his gaze to meet Damon’s. “Not directly.”

“She’s expecting a child, isn’t she?” Her weird eating habits might be explained by that. Billie had been really sick with the twins and couldn’t eat much of anything, but Teddy had strange cravings and a voracious appetite.

Fox nodded. “You can’t say anything. She’s not ready to tell anyone. We’ve been married for years, and we’ve tried before now. We just thought...”

“It wasn’t meant to be,” Damon finished for him.

“She’s scared.” He closed his eyes. “She is so afraid she’ll lose this baby that she won’t let me touch her. It’s been...a strain.”

Damon didn’t know what to tell him. He loved his sisters even when they drove him crazy. “Have you tried to talk to her about this? Or anyone else?”

“She won’t listen.
